CHRISTCHURCH, NZ
The 73c Sidecar Race Team showcased outright speed at Moore Park’s Battle of the Twins season opener, setting the fastest lap of the day before abrasive track conditions prompted a strategic withdrawal.
Facing extreme 30°C heat and gusting northwest winds, the Christchurch circuit quickly turned slick and dusty, pushing tires and cooling packages to their operational limits. Despite the track crew’s relentless preparation, the harsh track surface tore through two rear tires in just two heats. With a fresh engine under the fairing and safety at the forefront, the team made the disciplined decision to park the primary outfit while holding the day's speed benchmark.
“Mike and the track crew made a massive effort, but the club were up against a 30-degree day with NW wind,” the 73c Sidecar Race Team stated. “We withdrew after two heats due to the slick and dusty track. We also had a new engine and had already blown two tyres to bits. The boys still set the fastest lap of the day. Full credit to the club for their commitment and hard work—I think we will be forced in these conditions to run meetings later to avoid a repeat.”
On the team's second outfit, the 24c machine piloted by Cory Land and passenger Sam Elliot, the crew battled through the afternoon contending with a persistent engine misfire that curtailed their overall results.
With baseline data secured and machinery intact, the team now redirects its focus to the annual Dirt Quake meeting at Moore Park on November 21.
