A Legacy Dating Back to 1966
Historical archives highlight the deep roots Carina Speedway holds in Queensland's motorsport history. An aerial photograph taken on 21st May 1967—roughly one year after the speedway opened—shows the early footprint of the clay oval. According to local historical records, the venue hosted major championship events in its opening era, including the Queensland Solo Motorcycle Speedway Championship on that very date in May 1967.
Over six decades, the track evolved into a major regional complex. Most recently, the venue demonstrated its ongoing drawcard power by hosting the Allan Butcher Super Sedan Classic.
According to current real estate listing information, the property's specialized venue infrastructure includes:
-
Race & Operational Infrastructure: Control tower, steward's tower, stadium lighting, 3-phase power and a scrutineering shed.
-
Spectator Facilities: Viewing mounds, a grandstand, bar facilities and amenities blocks.
-
Property Features: Worker housing on-site and water security via two dams.
Marketing materials for the listing note the site’s potential for varied uses, subject to council approvals, including driver training, motocross or entertainment events.
Current Season Status: Racing Set to Continue
Despite the property hitting the market, social media updates from Autobarn Carina International Speedway indicate that operations are full steam ahead. In a recent official public update, the track teased their upcoming calendar with the statement: "WATCH THIS SPACE... BECAUSE THE 26/27 SEASON IS GOING TO BE HUGE!"
This indicates that upcoming events and seasonal planning remain active while the freehold land is offered for sale, signaling that the venue intends to maintain business as usual for drivers and fans.
Community Reaction & Broad Industry Concerns
The listing has generated immediate discussion among regional dirt track enthusiasts concerned about the future availability of local racing infrastructure.
Following the public listing, an anonymous motorsport fan who tipped off NDC shared a sentiment widely echoed across the grassroots community:
"I thought it would be a waste to be used for anything but speedway," the tipster told NDC. "The area needs more places to race dirt track."
The listing of longstanding speedway facilities across Australia frequently highlights a broader issue within the national motorsport landscape: the ongoing loss and transition of regional sporting venues. As land values rise and urban boundaries expand, grassroots venues across the country face increasing economic and operational pressures.
While the future usage of the Alloway site will ultimately depend on the intentions of prospective purchasers and relevant local authority planning approvals, the sale announcement has prompted discussion within the local racing community regarding the long-term preservation of regional track infrastructure.
"When a venue with six decades of continuous family ownership goes to market, it naturally raises questions for the grassroots community," says Jocelyn, Founder and Publisher of Nomad Dirt Culture. "At NDC, our role is to report on verified real estate developments neutrally while keeping a spotlight on the wider challenges facing Australian motorsport heritage and regional infrastructure."
