Nomad Dirt Culture is checking in live with our Australian drivers fighting it out on international clay. We got a update with Aussie sprintcar talent Brayden Cooley to get the raw story of what it takes to back your own gear and chase the ultimate dream at the Mecca of world motorsport: Knoxville Raceway, Iowa.

The Long-Term Family Goal & Custom Chassis

Building a campaign in the United States requires total commitment. Instead of buying a standard off-the-shelf package, Cooley is running a unique, family-engineered weapon.

"It's something that I've always wanted to do and achieve with my family and of course do it for the long run here at Knoxville Raceway... The car I'm starting off with is all brand new front to back and a new Shark Racing Engines and this particular chassis is something I have never ran before and my father John built this type of chassis to be more suited for the big 1/2 mile race track of Knoxville to suite the conditions."

  • The NDC Story: Behind every great driver is a dedicated crew. Operating outside massive factory teams, the Cooley family spent three years putting everything on the line to custom-build a car capable of handling the high-speed demands of Iowa's premier half-mile.

The American Culture Shock

Stepping onto US dirt introduces immediate, brutal adjustments in aerodynamics and track management that drivers simply don't experience on tighter domestic tracks.

"The biggest culture shock to me racing at Knoxville is 'dirty air' as I've never experienced it before and how the car reacts behind a bunch of cars is something I have never experienced anywhere else... The biggest difference between racing here and Australia would be the tyres are different, wings as well compared to what we run in Australia and has been a huge learning curve with the tyres over here as they do change a lot with sizing etc."

  • The NDC Story: Adapting to the States means completely re-learning how to manage a sprintcar when buried deep in a high-speed pack. From handling the loss of downforce in heavy traffic to mastering rapid tire sizing adjustments as the clay changes, it is a steep, relentless learning curve.

The 60-Hour Weekly Grind

Success on the world stage isn't bought—it's earned through grueling hours in the race shop making sure every single component is flawless.

"Spending at least 60 hours + a week to make sure myself and my team we get the best out of our car especially at Knoxville Raceway as it's so critical with being right on the mark from the get go. Definitely isn't cheap financially but it's definitely possible and I'm thankful that I have a lot of amazing people behind me to make it happen... first gotta get through the hard yards and keep on building onwards and upwards."

  • The NDC Story: This is the exact definition of grassroots grit. While corporate structures talk about the sport, independent families are putting in 60-hour work weeks away from home just to earn the right to push onwards and upwards on the world stage.

THE POWERHOUSE TAKEAWAY

Brayden Cooley’s campaign is proof that the pipeline to the top tier is open to anyone with the heart to engineer their own path. NDC will be tracking out drivers as they clear the hard yards and put tires to the ground.

Brayden is a worker! He’s out in the shop a LOT. After the basic wash and maintenance is done, he takes apart the stuff that many people ignore, cleans, checks, lubes and reassembles. He just needs a bit more speed and he’ll be in the hunt.
