MR. RELIABLE: HOW SAM MASTERS BECAME THE UNDISPUTED ANCHOR OF BRITISH SPEEDWAY

OXFORD, UK / NEWCASTLE, NSW

In a sport dictated by 500cc brakeless machines, zero-traction cornering, and relentless travel, longevity isn't given—it's forged. For Newcastle’s Sam Masters, a career spanning over 16 years at the highest levels of international speedway has quietly established him as one of Australian motorsport's most formidable exports.

Since making his British league debut in 2010, the Novocastrian has built a career defined by raw grit and silverware. From capturing the 2017 Australian Solo Speedway Championship to state crowns across NSW and Victoria, Masters' rise from domestic dirt tracks to anchoring premier European clubs remains a blueprint for grassroots Australian riders.

Now in 2026, Masters is putting together one of the most dominant statistical campaigns of his career. Serving as skipper for the Leicester Lions in the SGB Premiership while captaining the Oxford Cheetahs in the SGB Championship, the veteran has amassed 88 heat wins, 460 total points, and a staggering 9.52 Championship average.

That leadership was capped at Wimborne Road, where Masters partnered alongside Scott Nicholls to claim the SGB Championship Pairs Title for Oxford in a 6-3 final against Berwick.

Known universally as "Mr. Reliable," Masters continues to demonstrate why world-class teams build their rosters around his gate-leaving consistency.

"Sam Masters represents sixteen years of unyielding work ethic on global dirt," stated Jocelyn Dare, Host of Nomad Dirt Culture. "To win an Australian Championship in 2017 and still be captaining two European powerhouses with a 9.5+ average in 2026 proves that Novocastrian grit translates anywhere in the world."
