You can put all the money in the world into a factory race program, but you cannot buy the raw heart, soul and grit of grassroots dirt track racing.
For the Burnt Rebels Racing crew, the recent Mildura Classics was a weekend of pure reward. After pouring their hearts and souls into the sport over the entire season, they rolled out of the pits with definitive proof that their program is only getting better. The team absolutely dominated the track, coming away with hard-earned placings in all three contested classes. The absolute cherry on top of a stellar weekend was a massive victory in the Japanese 4 Stroke Under 50 category.
The victories were hard-fought and down to the wire. Big Jim Irwin and Jeremy Sherwood delivered a masterclass on the dirt, piloting the fondly named 'Fire Engine' Burnt Rebels Racing bike to smash the competition. What makes the win legendary is that they did it with a severely handicapped machine running in only second gear and limited to half-to-three-quarter throttle. They took the crown without even making full noise!
A massive achievement like this doesn't happen in isolation. The crew extended huge thanks to Greg Black and David Hession for stepping up in the pits to provide crucial physical and moral support.
While the Burnt Rebels crew stood proud under the club honour boards with their sashes, local trackside legends noted that the wider scene faces a challenge. Local enthusiast Joshua Kerr pointed out that while the on-track action was top-tier, the total number of bikes on the grid was sadly down compared to a couple of years ago.
That right there is the real battle. Grassroots racing doesn't just need fast riders; it needs packed grids, packed fences and communities rallying together to get these classic machines out of the sheds and back onto the start line. Burnt Rebels Racing just proved that the passion is alive, well and winning now it’s time for the rest of the community to step up, get involved and pack the grids for the next Classics.
Who else is already counting down the days and getting excited for the next gate drop?
