RACING FOR THE FRANGIPANI: 12-YEAR-OLD HAYLEY MCKENZIE HONOurs LATE SISTER ON THE Track

In the high-stakes, fast-paced world of grassroots speedway racing, 12-year-old Hayley "Dust Devil" McKenzie is preparing for a breakout season fueled by a purpose far deeper than podium finishes.

The young competitor, who is gearing up for her debut in the Junior New Stars category, has revealed that her racing journey is dedicated to the memory of her sister, Evie, whom the family tragically lost in 2018.

To honour her sister's enduring spirit, Hayley’s race car design will prominently feature a frangipani flower, a deeply meaningful symbol for the McKenzie family. The tribute serves as a trackside reminder of resilience, love and a family bond that extends far beyond the racing paddock.

A Journey Rooted in Family and Heritage

For Hayley, motorsport has always been a family affair. Born in Melbourne before relocating to the Gold Coast and eventually Hervey Bay, she grew up immersed in car culture. Encouraged by her parents, whose own country roots instilled a love for cars, bikes and horses, Hayley fell in love with the sport at just four years old while watching the dirt fly at the historic Avalon Speedway.

Supported by her parents and her three younger siblings, Cooper, Evie and Ollie, Hayley’s transition from a passionate spectator to a driver represents the realisation of a lifelong dream.

"My design will incorporate a frangipani flower for my sister Evie, who we lost in 2018," Hayley shared. "She is a huge reason I want to race. Life is short and it can end anytime, so do what you love and enjoy the time you have. I currently don't have any sponsors, just the love and support of my family. But with them at my side, I can do anything."

Chasing Championship Dreams

Despite operating as a purely family-backed independent team without major corporate backing, Hayley has set ambitious benchmarks for her rookie year. Her goals for the upcoming season include continuous track-time improvement, lowering her lap times at every meet, and climbing the podium steps. Ultimately, she aims to capture the Junior New Stars #1 spot at the upcoming State Titles.

Her mature perspective on life and racing has already struck a powerful chord within the regional motorsport community. It serves as a poignant reminder that behind the roaring engines and mechanical builds of the pits are deeply human stories of love, loss and unbreakable family dedication.

As the season gets underway, the speedway community will undoubtedly be watching the #1 car, not just for Hayley's talent on the dirt, but for the beautiful memory she carries with her on every single lap.

A Call for Community Support

While Hayley possesses the drive, talent, and an unshakeable support system in her family, the #1 Junior New Star team currently operates with zero corporate backing or external sponsorship.

Nomad Dirt Culture is officially calling on local businesses, automotive brands and community sponsors who want to align with an inspiring young athlete and help fuel Hayley’s state title ambitions for the upcoming season.
