The raw history of Australian speedway was brought back to life last weekend as thirty-two legendary drivers, officials, and families gathered at the Queens Hotel for the historic Burdekin Speed Car Club Formula 500 Reunion.
Marking the first formal gathering of the club’s pioneers since 1988, the event served as a living time capsule for grassroots open-wheel racing in North Queensland. For Nomad Dirt Culture, an organisation dedicated to safeguarding 125 years of Australian motorsport heritage, events like this showcase the exact human grit that built our sport from the dirt up.
From Cane Paddocks to National Champions
The reunion honored a history that dates back to the 1950s, a time when Formula 500 (originally known as TQ, or Three-Quarter Midgets) racing was born out of pure backyard ingenuity. Long before purpose-built stadiums existed, local racers tore up makeshift tracks carved out of cane paddocks, backyards, and the Home Hill Showgrounds.
The sport matured through the 1960s at the Brandon Sports Reserve, ultimately exploding into a golden era with the opening of the iconic Pioneer Park Speedway in Brandon in 1974. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, the Burdekin Speed Car Club consistently produced the cream of the crop, boasting state and national speedway champions.
Lifelong Friends, Former Rivals
Organised and masterfully hosted by MC Bev Bosel, the room was filled with over 500 historic photos, invaluable newspaper clippings and decades of shared stories.

The Cutting of the Cake: The honor went to the club’s oldest living member, 88-year-old Ralph Escriva, alongside oldest co-competitor Sam Nucifora Snr and trailblazing local female Formula 500 driver Carol Walker.

The Long-Haul Return: Drivers travelled from as far as Canberra, Caboolture, Cooloola Cove, Mackay, Bowen, and Townsville just to swap stories once more.

A Winner Once More: Pioneer Park stalwart Gordon “Pappsy” Papps walked away with the day's ultimate raffle prize, a beautifully restored vintage Formula 500 wing custom-wrapped by Mike Coleman.
“We may have been fierce rivals on the track, but when it comes to off the track, we made lifelong friends,” noted the attendees. “It is just incredible to catch up back here in the Burdekin again.”
