SIX YEARS OLD AND MAKING HISTORY: HOW YOUTH SENSATION KARTER MCKAY IS REDEFINING GRASSROOTS SPEEDWAY

Public interest in the future of grassroots motorsport has reached a fever pitch following the historic national recognition of six-year-old speedway sensation Karter McKay. The young phenom is capturing the hearts of racing fans globally by proving that raw talent and determination know absolutely no age limits.

A Historic National Nomination

McKay has officially broken records by becoming the youngest nominee across the board for the prestigious 2026 Speedway New Zealand Awards. Representing his home team as the sole nominee from the Auckland Speedway Riders Club, McKay has been nominated for the highly competitive Speedway New Zealand’s Competitor of the Year – Regional Youth Bike Award. The final winners are set to be announced at the official ceremony in Christchurch on Saturday, 18 July.

Auckland Speedway Riders Club President Brian Guptill praised the young prodigy, noting his role as an elite ambassador for the sport:

"Despite his age, he displays determination, sportsmanship and respect both on and off the track, and that’s exactly what we want to see from our young riders."

Dominance by the Numbers

Competeing in the Peewee Solo Motorcycle class, McKay pilots a 53cc motorcycle. He regularly lines up on the grid against older competitors aged seven and eight who are riding larger machines up to 75cc.

As a proud third-generation speedway rider, his competitive track record is nothing short of legendary:

• The Debut: First climbed aboard a speedway bike in January 2025 and clean-swept the field by winning all four of his debut races.

• The Record Books: Became the youngest Speedway New Zealand Champion in history at just five years old during the 2024/25 Youth Gold Cup at Rosebank Speedway.

• The Streak: Over two full seasons of high-octane competition, McKay has only been beaten across the finish line a single time—by a rider four years his senior.

• The 2025/26 Campaign: Claimed six dominant victories and two runner-up finishes across eight major race meetings.

True Grassroots Grit

The public interest surrounding McKay extends far beyond his trophy cabinet. The sheer dedication of the McKay family highlights the raw spirit of the grassroots community, having travelled more than 8,400 kilometres over the season to compete against the absolute best riders in the country.

Even when faced with sudden adversity such as a crushing technical exclusion in his second heat at the Youth Gold Cup in Christchurch, McKay showed elite sportsmanship and grit by storming back to win his remaining three races. The effort secured him second place overall, making him the only North Island rider to stand on the podium.

Off the track, McKay remains a standard student at Manchester Street School in Feilding, where his classmates in Room A regularly watch his race reels together and cheer him on from the classroom. When asked about his meteoric rise, McKay kept it simple: "I love racing, and I'm really excited about my nomination."
