The Micro Class with a Massive Heart: Inside the Queensland Microsprint Championship Night

The Micro Class with a Massive Heart: Inside the Queensland Microsprint Championship Night

There is an unmistakable electricity that surrounds Queensland Microsprints. Operating at the raw intersection of precision engineering, lightweight open-wheel agility and fierce grassroots ambition, this class proves you don't need a massive corporate budget to produce world-class dirt track racing. Behind the high-revving engines and lightning-fast corner speeds lies one of the most welcoming, family-driven communities in Australian speedway—a reality on full display as the club gathered at the Mermaid Waters Hotel on Queensland’s Gold Coast to celebrate their 2025/2026 season.

Framed by checkered flag decorations, polished trophies and an electric atmosphere, the presentation night brought drivers, crew chiefs and multi-generational families together to swap pit-lane fire suits for evening wear. Nomad Dirt Culture founder Jocelyn Dare had the distinct privilege of attending as an invited guest alongside her daughter and partner. From the moment they arrived at the Gold Coast venue, the club demonstrated why Queensland Microsprints stands as a gold standard for grassroots racing culture. Greeted with open arms and thoughtful sponsor-backed goodie bags before a live band took the stage, keeping the dance floor packed late into the night.

The evening’s highest honours showcased the incredible depth of talent running through the microsprint ranks. Ben LePla claimed the ultimate prize as the Queensland Microsprints Club Champion, capping off a dominant, ironclad season backed by a 100% attendance record. Lucas Dansey took home a hard-fought second place in the championship standings after showing relentless lap-after-lap progression and locking into thrilling photo-finish battles throughout the year.

Allan Baker rounded out the championship podium in third, recognized for his razor-sharp consistency and matching 100% trackside commitment.

The special awards highlighted the heart and versatility that define the class. Michelle Dansey received the prestigious Pedders Award for Excellence generously sponsored by Sal and Pedders Capalaba for her remarkable adaptability steering across the Q17, Q10, and Q46 machines. Troy LePla earned Rookie of the Year after an explosive debut season that saw him grid up for his very first race and charge straight onto the Queensland State Title podium in third place. Veteran driver John Lawson was also celebrated for his standout State Title drive into fourth position.

Queensland Microsprints isn't just a stepping stone or a niche category; it is a powerhouse of skill, sportsmanship and genuine passion. As the curtain fell on another brilliant season on the Gold Coast, the club proved that its true strength lives both on the dirt and in the unbreakable community standing behind it.
