THE SOUL OF THE PADDOCK: WHY LIBBY ELLIS'S NO.Q46 RIDE AT GATTON RUNS DEEPER THAN JUST A RACE NIGHT

Published: 18th May 2026, River 94.9 Lockyer Valley Speedway

Sometimes, walking the pits at a grassroots track like Lockyer Valley Speedway uncovers history so rich it gives you goosebumps.

Over the weekend, fans watched Queensland Sprintcar standout Libby Ellis put on an absolute clinic, steering the formidable No. Q46 Microsprint hard into the Gatton cushions. But the real magic was happening behind the wrench.

This beautiful blue machine was supplied, prepared and campaigned on the night by speedway veteran John Lawson. For the true purists out there, the Lawson name is sacred soil. John is the son of the legendary Aub Lawson a pioneer, multi-time Australian Solo Champion and World Finalist who famously conquered the golden era of Speedway at Wembley, defining the grit and soul of Aussie dirt track racing in the mid-20th century.

To see John Lawson out there in the Gatton pits, still pouring his heart into the sport and passing down generations of knowledge to launch a talent like Libby Ellis, captures the exact essence of why we love this community. It’s a living, breathing link to the trailblazers who built Australian speedway from the dirt up.
A massive shoutout to Allan from the Baker Racing crew for cluing us into this incredible story. Finding, preserving, and sharing these deep generational ties is exactly why we show up with our cameras.
